A Western Grebe

Balmorhea Lake is a reservoir on Sandia Creek 2 miles southeast of downtown Balmorhea, Texas. Water from Toyah Creek, fed by the nearby San Solomon Springs, is also fed into the reservoir, as is excess water in the Phantom Lake Canal. Historians believe that people have used springs in this area for more than 11,000 years. The water level varies during the year, higher in the winter and lower in the summer based on the agricultural needs of the surrounding area.

Shorebirds are abundant

Balmorhea Lake is home to over 200 species of birds, including a variety of migratory species, which makes it a prime spot for capturing unique images. Bird species commonly sighted include great blue herons, egrets, pelicans, ducks, hawks, owls, and numerous migratory species. Clarks, Western, and Eared grebes are a special photographic treat seen in scarcely any other places in West Texas.
