Like a lot of wildlife photographers, I carry binoculars with me when I go out to photograph. I recently found that my Nikon Monarch 3 binoculars were not focusing correctly. Because of their age, I decided to replace them with a new pair from Vortex Optical, the Viper HD. After my new purchase, I had nothing to lose, so I decided to test the lifetime warranty from Nikon. I sent the old pair in for repair. Somewhat to my surprise, two weeks late,r I received a new pair of Monarch M5 binoculars in their place along with a letter stating that the others were unrepairable and would be replaced at no charge. Kudos to Nikon for honoring their lifetime warranty. I now have two great binoculars, and what follows is a review of both.

It’s important to note that using binoculars in wildlife photography can offer several benefits, such as:
Improved Observation: Binoculars provide a closer and clearer view of wildlife, allowing photographers to observe animals and their behavior in more detail and provide quicker, more accurate identification of a particular species of interest.
Enhanced Composition: Binoculars can help photographers to compose their shots more effectively, allowing them to capture the subject in a way that is visually appealing and conveys the desired message.
Increased Safety: Wildlife photography often involves getting close to wild animals, which can be dangerous. Binoculars allow photographers to observe animals from a safe distance, reducing the risk of injury.
Greater Efficiency: By using binoculars to scout the area before taking pictures, photographers can save time and effort by identifying potential subjects and deciding on the best vantage point before setting up their equipment.
Overall, using binoculars in wildlife photography can help photographers to capture better images, stay safe, and work more efficiently.
The Nikon Monarch M5 8×42 and the Vortex Viper 10×50 are two high-quality binoculars designed for outdoor enthusiasts, bird watchers, hunters, and other nature lovers. While both binoculars offer superior optical performance and build quality, they have distinct features that make them different from each other. The Vortex is 10×50, while the Nikon is 8×42.
When comparing 10×50 and 8×42 binoculars, each offers distinct advantages and disadvantages suited to different viewing needs. The 10×50 model delivers higher magnification, making distant objects appear larger and more detailed, which is ideal for activities like birdwatching in open terrain or casual astronomy. Its larger 50mm objective lenses also gather more light, providing brighter images in low-light conditions such as dawn, dusk, or stargazing. However, the increased magnification results in a narrower field of view, making it harder to track moving subjects, and produces a shakier image—often requiring a tripod for steady viewing. The bulkier size and heavier weight can also be less comfortable for prolonged handheld use and less portable for travel.
In contrast, 8×42 binoculars are widely regarded as versatile “all-rounders.” With slightly lower magnification, they offer a wider field of view and greater image stability, making it easier to locate and follow moving wildlife or scan large areas, especially in dense environments like forests. Their 42mm lenses still capture plenty of light, giving good performance during daylight and at dawn or dusk, though not as bright as 10x50s in the dimmest conditions. Additionally, 8×42 binoculars are generally lighter and more compact, making them comfortable for extended handheld use and easy to carry, which is ideal for beginners and those seeking all-day versatility. However, for observing very distant subjects, their lower magnification means less visible detail compared to the 10×50 model.
Both pairs came with padded cases. The Vortex came with a nice chest strap attached to the case; the Monarchs did not. The Monarchs are quite physically smaller. They both come with front and back protective lens covers.
The Nikon Monarch M5 8×42:

Pros:
Optical Performance: The Nikon Monarch M5 8×42 offers superior optical performance, with a large 42mm objective lens diameter that delivers bright and sharp images even in low light conditions. It also features ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass that helps reduce chromatic aberration and produces high-contrast images.
Fully Multicoated Lenses & Phase-Corrected Prisms: Enhance light transmission and image brightness, providing clearer and brighter views even at dawn or dusk. Dielectric coatings further improve color fidelity and overall visual clarity.
Build Quality: The Nikon Monarch M5 8×42 is built with a durable, lightweight magnesium-alloy chassis that makes it easy to handle and transport. It is also waterproof and fog-proof, which makes it ideal for use in all weather conditions.
User-friendly: The Nikon Monarch M5 8×42 is easy to use, with a smooth central focus knob and adjustable eyecups that provide a comfortable viewing experience for all users, including eyeglass wearers. They provide generous long eye relief (up to 19.5mm) and turn-and-slide rubber eyecups with multiple click-stops, ensuring comfort for eyeglass wearers and easy adjustment in the field.
Warranty: Nikon offers a limited lifetime warranty on the Nikon Monarch M5 8×42, which gives buyers peace of mind knowing that their investment is protected.

Cons:
Narrow Field of View: The Nikon Monarch M5 8×42 has a relatively narrow field of view, but it is a larger field of view than the Vortex, which is more stable at distance, and makes it easier than the Vortex Viper to view fast-moving objects or birds in flight.
Heavy: The Nikon Monarch M5 8×42 is relatively heavy, weighing 20.8 ounces, which may be a drawback for some users who prefer lighter binoculars. However, they are significantly lighter, by 8 ounces, than the Vortex.
The Vortex Viper 10×50:

Pros:
- Magnification & Objective Lens: 10x magnification paired with large 50mm objective lenses results in excellent detail for distant subjects and superior light gathering for low-light conditions.
- HD (High Density) Extra-low Dispersion Glass: Delivers sharp, high-resolution, and true-to-color images with minimal chromatic aberration.
- XR™ Fully Multi-Coated Lenses: Proprietary multi-layer coatings enhance light transmission and image brightness for maximal clarity, even at dawn and dusk.
- Dielectric & Phase-Corrected Roof Prisms: Ensure accurate color reproduction, enhanced contrast, and overall optical sharpness.
- Rugged Build: ArmorTek coating protects exterior lenses from scratches, oil, and dirt; robust rubber armor provides a secure, non-slip grip and impact resistance.
- Weather Resistance: Waterproof and fogproof performance guaranteed by argon gas purging and O-ring seals.
- Convenient Ergonomics: Adjustable twist-up eyecups, 16mm eye relief suitable for eyeglass users, and a central focus wheel for fast, precise focusing.
- Lightweight & Compact: At roughly 28.4 oz, among the lightest full-size binoculars on the market; comfortable for all-day field use.
- Included Accessories: Rainguard eyepiece cover, tethered objective lens covers, comfort neck strap, and a GlassPak chest harness for hands-free carrying.
- Lifetime VIP Warranty: Comprehensive repair/replacement coverage.

Cons:
Heavy: The Vortex Viper 10×50 is relatively heavy, weighing 28.1 ounces, which may be a drawback for some users who prefer lighter binoculars. These are large binoculars and work best with stabilization.
Eye Relief: The Vortex Viper 10×50 has a shorter eye relief compared to the Nikon Monarch M5 8×42, which may be a drawback for users who wear glasses.

In conclusion, both the Nikon Monarch 5 and Vortex Viper binoculars represent excellent choices for anyone seeking quality optics in the field. I carry both in my truck because each excels in different scenarios. For distant observations during the late evening, I prefer the Vortex Viper binoculars—their larger objective lenses and superior light-gathering ability deliver brighter, sharper images when light is fading. On the other hand, for general use throughout the day, I favor the Nikon Monarch 5 thanks to its their more compact size and lighter weight, which make them comfortable and versatile for all-day carry and spontaneous wildlife viewing. With these two options at hand, I am well-equipped for any outdoor adventure, confident that I have the right tool for every viewing challenge.
